Track by track album review

1. The 1975 - Nice little intro giving you a hint that the album will be very atmospheric and dark with a twang of catchy vocals. 2. The City - Going straight into "The City" which cuts straight through the grimy dark synth with huge snare hits. This is the first glimpse of the catchy poppy sing a long music on the album. The songs lyrics are all very youthful giving it that real first album feel. 3. M.O.N.E.Y - A very musically different song now, the electronic feel gives the band another dimension. This track has a very laid back smokey night feel, Matt Healys vocals can a lot of the times over power this in a bad way. Still very groovey but deffonatly a massive change from "This City". 4. Chocolate - One of the most talked about song of Summer 13 "Chocolate" is an absolute anthem. Loved by all types of music fans I've come across. The repetative guitar riff makes it easy to move your head to, supported by the solid drum work from George Daniel. With an extremely catchy chorus it makes everyone uplifted even if your not into this sort of music. 5. Sex - Another great track here, very gritty and angry. Throughout the verse it just feels like Matt Healy has something he wants to scream out and is holding it all in. With a lot of lyrics about youthful activities, it sounds like this song could have been wrote after a night out. Once again another great indie rock sing a long track from the manchester lads. 6. Talk! - A nice vocal performance from Matt in this track. I cant help but think of "my number" from Foals with the very fragmented baseline. 7. An Encounter - A short sigur ros inspired break now, full of whale noises. 8. Heart Out - 80s ... A VERY poppy song here, nothing special. 9. Settle Down - One of the best tracks on the album now, "settle down" has the groove and catchiness of chocolate with a more funky twist. Just a great song, that will get you singing along in no time. 10. Robbers - A more slow ballad/ jam with a very "Only By The Night" guitar riff that is played through the song that gives it a nostalgic feel. Its seems a bit to much of a musical change from "Settle Down" but Matt Healy soon draws you in with a meaningful vocal performance. 11. Girls - Simple a well wrote pop song. A massive guilty pleasure song here, super poppy but stupidly addictive. Although Matt's voice can be very annoying throughout some of the album theres no doubting he can write some catchy melodies. A bit of a fun injection to the album after "Robbers". 12. 12 - Another short sigur ros inspired break. 13. She Way Out - Straight back in with a sharp indie riff, steady beat and girls inspired lyrics. Sounding a little like "Settle Down" before it drops down into a west coast inspired relaxing break, built back up into the verse, chorus and outro. Just an average indie pop song. 14. Menswear - Into a very low fi electronica track now "Menswear" has a chilled vibe to it with some nicely exicuted chord changes. I like this side of "The 1975" these sorts of tracks feel very well thought out, playing with effects. Then when you least expect in, in comes the drums and vocals. Once again a very much female and nights out lyrics inspired feel going on. Great song! 15. Pressure - If The 1975 and Haim had a love child it would be this track. Keeping the catchy feel to it, this song feels a little different from the rest and especially 2.10 onwards when the saxophone gets introduced, it turns very late night 80s. 16. Is There Anyone Who Can Watch You - A personal one from Matt Healy here, sounding slightly like Bon Iver. With he's voice cracking every now and then it gives a it an emotional touch. Dropping all the indie pop guitar sounds and strong drums this is a skeleton of a song from Matt Healy on piano. With love, girls, drugs, nights out and youth being a huge lyric filler through out the album this feels like he is reflecting.
